About the Fund
The Yale School of Art Student Support Fund (SSF) was established in May 2020 by the generosity of faculty, staff, alumni and donors. The mission of the fund was to offer direct support to School of Art students to cover unexpected urgent needs such as emergency housing, food, utility, travel, health and medical costs during the early phase of the COVID-19 disruption in Spring 2020. The fund’s focus now is to continue to offer emergency aid to our students for costs that arise due to unanticipated circumstances and/or crisis, towards the maintenance of their well-being and health.
The fund is currently open for application and can offer awards to enrolled students, determined on a case-by-case basis prioritizing those in urgent, dire or immediate need. Qualified applicants are those who face unanticipated and extreme financial hardship, emergency or displacement. The fund does not cover recurring expenses or costs outlined within the School’s normal cost of attendance; instead, it is intended as an emergency grant for enrolled School of Art MFA students who cannot reasonably resolve immediate financial difficulty through other resources. One of the fund’s urgent priorities is to support international students of the highest need who are experiencing impending or mandated travel, visa and/or labor restrictions.
Students must be currently enrolled at the School of Art and requested funds must be used to cover the applicant’s expenses. Applications must include as much relevant and available documentation as possible. Relevant documentation, if not included, will be requested. The fund cannot be used to pay for tuition and is not set up to subsidize or cover the costs of studio work production, materials, or equipment.
The committee will award none, a portion of, or all of the request, based on need and availability. The grant will not require repayment, but for the purpose of University auditing, grant recipients should be prepared to submit receipts or documentation of expenses paid for by the grant.
Applications are reviewed on the 15th and last day of each month. If your situation requires immediate attention, please email soastudentrelations@yale.edu with “URGENT” in the subject line after completing your application.
