A Grand Union

A Grand Union unites students across a range of classes in the Sculpture department:

Intro to Metal, taught by Lili Chin features works that take up a playful conversation around drawing, perception and metal, such as seen in Ren Manuel, Soleil Piverger, Amy Fang and Nick Napoli’s pieces. Suspended forms by Helen Xiong, Yuwei Tu and Josie Crespo Helm consider balance and weight suggested with animals, maple seeds and organic husks. More grounded works by Zach Reich and Amy Wang offer domestic and whimsical approaches to industrialized aluminum and casted bronze which are placed amidst painted steel works that reach for the sky with water and clouds created by Annika Mengwall and Thomasin Schmults. This collection of work joyfully explores the myriad approaches to form and content with metal. Special thanks to Julia Helen Murray and Jason Friedes.

Interdisciplinary Explorations for Making Fictional Worlds, Flying Machines and Shaking Things Up and Sculpture for Irrational Collaborative Play, taught by Nathan Carter, features works exploring kite making, fictional world building, peculiar flying machines, shadow puppet theater performances and teleportation devices…because in 2025 who wouldn’t want to find a way out of this world!

Principles of Animation, taught by Ben Hagari, features works exploring themes of metamorphosis, optical illusion, and hybridity. Lost Films presents stop-motion animations incorporating shadow techniques, hand drawing, 16mm film, and optical devices by Amy Chasse, Moriah Hogans, Cole Jackson, Aster Jin, Heejae Kim, Cindy Liu, and Mailina Reber. The works are projected within an enlarged drawing of the theatre used by magician and pioneering filmmaker Georges Méliès, whose films—including his many lost ones—inspired this project.
