Dear School of Art Community,
As has been reported by various press outlets, a member of our community, among other women, gave an account of being sexually harassed by prominent artist Chuck Close. I am treating these allegations very seriously and am reviewing this matter. Some weeks ago, the Yale School of Art was fortunate enough to have received the commitment from a generous donor to help foster our commitment to diversity and to building initiatives that reflect on the relationship of art to social justice. As dean, I embrace that initiative and take seriously our responsibility as a graduate school of higher education to promote civil engagement and mutual respect, especially in regard to the values of diversity and gender justice. With these priorities set for the institution, the Yale School of Art emphasizes that sexual harassment will not be tolerated either within the School of Art, or in formally associated communities aimed to advise, counsel, or to support the School. I encourage any members of our community who have been affected by sexual misconduct to take advantage of Yale’s resources that provide support and accommodations and Yale’s mechanisms for reporting incidents. You can access those resources at: https://smr.yale.edu
During my tenure, I will continue to focus on building a community that shares in these values through a reengagement with our alumni and outreach to the wider arts community, both nationally and internationally.
Sincerely,
Marta Kuzma
Stavros Niarchos Foundation Dean
Professor of Art
