From this site, you can download the Guide to Printing with CUPS, a guide to printing from the command line using CUPS: the Common Unix Printing System installed on all Apple Computers. Hello!
You've downloaded the Guide to Printing with CUPS, a guide to printing from the command
line using CUPS: the Common Unix Printing System installed on all Apple Computers. This
guide is meant to be used in conjunction with the Courtesy Printer, a free networked
printer housed in the Yale School of Art's Graphic Design atrium. You're encouraged to
print and read this guide, and experiment with command line printing using the Courtesy
Printer.
THE SHORT VERSION
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. Install the Courtesy Printer
2. Make sure this entire folder ("cups_guide") is on your Desktop
3. Open Terminal and run the commands from this document
THE DETAILED VERSION
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. Install the Courtesy Printer on your computer.
Go to System Preferences -> Print and Scan -> click the + symbol. Now select the IP
menu option from the top row. You can now add the Courtesy Printer via the IP address.
Here is the IP address for the Courtesy Printer:
130.132.242.153
Name the printer "courtesy_printer".
2. Drag this entire folder (named "cups_guide") onto your desktop (make sure it's not
still in your Downloads folder).
3. Open the application called Terminal. It's in your Utilities folder, which is in
your Applications folder. Or use the Spotlight function (⌘ + space, then type
“Terminal”).
Once inside Terminal, you'll see a string of information followed by $. Before the
dollar sign is your user name. For example:
~ XXXX$
with XXXX being your user name.
Copy the chunks of text below, and paste them into Terminal. Just copy what is between
the ****, not the **** themselves. Also, take care not to copy the return-space at the
end of each line.
// 01.txt
****
lp -d courtesy_printer -o landscape -o cpi=1.2 -o lpi=0.13 -o sides=two-sided-short-edge -o page-ranges=1-2 /users/XXXX/desktop/cups_guide/01.txt
****
In terminal, use your left and right arrow keys to navigate back to the XXXX and delete
it. Replace it with your user name (what comes just before the $). Alternately, you
could find and replace all XXXX in this document with your username.
Now press the <enter> key.
Repeat the process with the following chunks of text. (Again, use only what's between
the **** and remember to change the XXXX to your username.)
// 02.txt
****
lp -d courtesy_printer -o cpi=17.1 -o lpi=10.5 -o sides=two-sided-short-edge -o page-ranges=1-2 /users/XXXX/desktop/cups_guide/02.txt
****
// 03.txt
****
lp -d courtesy_printer -o cpi=.8 -o lpi=.2 -o page-border=double-thick -o number-up=16 -o page-bottom=100 -o page-top=100 -o page-left=100 -o page-right=100 -o columns=3 -o sides=two-sided-short-edge /users/XXXX/desktop/cups_guide/03.txt
****
// 04.txt
****
lp -d courtesy_printer -o cpi=0.25 -o lpi=0.15 -o number-up=2 -o sides=two-sided-short-edge -o print-ranges=1-2 /users/XXXX/desktop/cups_guide/04.txt
****
// 05.txt
****
lp -d courtesy_printer -o cpi=4.7 -o lpi=.7 -o number-up=2 -o page-bottom=30 -o page-top=30 -o page-left=40 -o page-right=30 -o columns=1 -o sides=two-sided-short-edge /users/XXXX/desktop/cups_guide/05.txt
****
// 06.txt
****
lp -d courtesy_printer -o cpi=10 -o lpi=6 -o sides=two-sided-short-edge -o page-ranges=1-2 /Users/XXXX/desktop/cups_guide/06.txt
****
// The Guide
****
lp -d courtesy_printer -o cpi=8.75 -o lpi=5.5 -o number-up=2 -o page-bottom=30 -o page-top=30 -o page-left=40 -o page-right=30 -o columns=2 -o sides=two-sided-short-edge -o page-ranges=1-6 /users/XXXX/desktop/cups_guide/cups_printing_guide.txt
****
Go to the Courtesy Printer. Pick up the prints, and fold down the middle. You're now
holding the Guide to Printing with CUPS.
