The Yale School of Art is pleased to announce that today, 2014 alumna of the Painting/Printmaking program Jordan Casteel, was named a 2021 MacArthur Fellow by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. The youngest of the 2021 class of MacArthur fellows, Casteel is one of twenty-five artists, scholars, and scientists selected for their work across disciplines, ranging from civil rights, computational virology and geomorphology, to performance and visual arts.
MacArthur Fellows are selected based on three criteria: exceptional creativity, promise for significant future advances based on past accomplishments, and potential for the fellowship to facilitate subsequent creative work. “As we emerge from the shadows of the past two years, this class of twenty-five fellows helps us reimagine what’s possible,” said MacArthur Fellows managing director Cecilia Conrad. “They demonstrate that creativity has no boundaries.”
Formerly known as “genius grants,” each fellowship includes a five-year stipend of $625,000 intended to fund each fellow’s practice. After Casteel’s time in New Haven, her work was the subject of two solo exhibitions at Sargent’s Daughters in 2014 (Visible Men) and 2015 (Brothers), before the artist participated in the Studio Museum in Harlem’s program for emerging artists as a 2015-2016 Artist-in- Residence. In 2019, the institutional solo exhibition Jordan Casteel: Returning the Gaze was presented in the artist’s home city of Denver, Colorado at the Denver Art Museum, as well as at the Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Center for Visual Arts at Stanford University in California (2019–20). In 2020, Casteel presented the solo exhibition Within Reach, at the New Museum in New York, staged in conjunction with the publication of a fully illustrated catalogue.
