Art 665b, Unraveling
The course, unraveling: the end of time and where do we go from here, will address a spectrum of current cultural issues reflecting on our artistic inventions in response to or indifferent to the complicated social landscape we share. Current political, social and economic issues will be discussed in relationship to artistic practices. How do we take a stand, what is political in our lives, in our work, how do we experience freedom, where is a studio practice today, what’s at stake, what do we share (public) and what do we retain for ourselves (private), who benefits from our practices, where do we go once the art world is gone, self invention, what is the job of artists today and how will that job impact what tomorrow looks like?
We will be making numerous trips to NYC to visit museums, collections, curators and performances. Students will be required to attend at least one evening performance in NYC.
Meets six times for 1.5 credits, first class meets 1/17, others TBA.
