LABoratory stages an investigation of the pictorial devices, conceptual positions, technologies, pedagogies and contexts surrounding the practice of painting in America from the mid-20thcentury to the present. Paintings are viewed and discussed in relation to other contemporaneous art practices, and, within the larger ambient cultural/social environment. While painting is a main focus of this course, works in all media will be viewed in relation to their relative and relational contexts irrespective of stylistic classifications or hierarchies. In other words, painting will be viewed as critical undertaking existing alongside a number of creative, social and technological forces.
