PAINTING/PRINTMAKING art532, Spatial Matters
Structured as a creative research and art practice group, this course explores ecology and environmentalism at the intersection of capitalism, identity, class, and place. We begin by examining select theoretical and curatorial projects starting with Sylvia Wynter’s text on ecological origins of the West and David R. Roediger’s essay for the exhibition Whiteness: A Wayward Construction. These and other texts guide us in critical discussion on artists such as Julie Mehretu and Thomas Hirschhorn’s work on space and materiality. In the second half of the term, students look at artists such as Mark Bradford and Liam Gillick and develop individual or collaborative projects, emphasizing critical approaches rooted in the politics of spatial abstraction. Additional materials include texts, podcasts, and videos by Henri Lefebvre, Fred Moten, Keller Easterling, Miwon Kwon, Arthur Jafa, and Naomi Klein.Editor details
